Sun-damaged skin

Sunburn is a form of acute skin damage that occurs as a result of overexposure to UV radiation (primarily UVB) from the sun or tanning beds. It is an inflammatory reaction where the skin becomes burned – typically after too much time in the sun without adequate protection. It needs rest, cooling and moisturizing care – as well as prevention in the future.

Sun-damaged skin

Unlike an acute sunburn, sun-damaged skin occurs gradually through repeated UV exposure and can over time cause permanent changes in the structure and appearance of the skin. Often seen as pigment spots, also known as age spots.
Sometimes these spots can be thickened and rough. Sun damage can take up to 15-30 years to surface.

Characteristics of sun-damaged skin

  • Sunspots (lentigines): Dark spots, especially on the face, hands, chest and shoulders.
  • Hyper- and hypopigmentation: Some areas become darker, while others lose color.
  • Loss of collagen and elastin causes wrinkles, fine lines and sagging.
  • The skin often takes on a “leathery” appearance, especially on the face and on the neck, chest and forearms.
  • The skin feels uneven, dry, or rough.
  • May be thicker and less elastic.
  • Fine, red blood vessels may become visible, especially on the cheeks and nose.
  • Actinic keratoses: Small, rough and scaly spots – often a precursor to skin cancer.
  • Increased risk of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.

What happens in the skin?

  • UVB rays damage the DNA of cells → increases the risk of mutations and skin cancer.
  • UVA rays penetrate deeper and destroy collagen and elastin → leading to premature aging (photoaging).
  • Free radicals form in the skin and damage cells over time.

Prevention and treatment

  • Use daily sun protection SPF 15 all year round. In the summer months, turn up the strength and use SPF 30 and SPF 50 in very exposed areas. Always apply twice with approx. 10 min. intervals. This way you ensure optimal protection.
  • Avoid excessive sunbathing and tanning beds. Tanning beds correspond to a UV index of 12. Also requires high sun protection.
  • Protect your skin with clothing, a hat and shade.
  • Avoid the sun's rays between 12-3 pm, when the UV index is highest.

Treatment

  • Use creams daily that contain vitamin A. They stimulate cell renewal and collagen.
  • Use products that contain a variety of antioxidants (vitamins C and E). They protect against free radicals.
  • Moisturizing products – improve skin comfort and barrier.
  • Laser treatment can remove damaged skin and improve skin tone. But the DNA damage has happened.

Our LIGHT face cream contains natural vitamin A as well as vitamins C and E. It also contains hyaluronic acid, which is very moisturizing.
To optimize the supply of antioxidants and moisture, we recommend using our SERUM under your face cream.

Our OIL can be really nice to use in the evening or under your day cream for extra protection and it is packed with antioxidants.

BODY BUTTER contains ginger and kukui nut oil which helps soothe sun-damaged skin. Can also be used as an active moisturizing mask.

Risks and long-term effects:

  • Repeated sunburns increase the risk of skin cancer (especially melanoma).
  • Promotes premature skin aging: wrinkles, pigment spots, sagging skin.
  • Weakens the skin's immune defense and barrier function.
